New York, NY (December 9, 2011) – Producers Andrew Asnes and Timothy Schmidt have announced the New York Premiere of the new musical comedy Rated P for Parenthood.  Following on the heels of a successful World Premiere at the South Orange Performing Arts Center in May, 2011, Rated P will begin performances on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 with Opening Night set for Sunday, February 26, 2012 at the Westside Theatre (407 West 43rd Street).

With book and lyrics by Sandy Rustin, music and lyrics by Dan Lipton & David Rossmer and direction by Jeremy Dobrish, Rated P for Parenthood chronicles every stage of modern-day parenting, from conception to college, with giant doses of heart and humor.  A versatile cast of four takes the audience through the ups and downs of childrearing – from the sublime to the ridiculous – in a series of comic and musical vignettes in under 90 minutes.  A hilarious, fresh, and decidedly irreverent look at an age old topic, Rated P provides all the wistful joy of childrearing …at a fraction of the cost of braces!

Sandy Rustin commented, “Comedy greats will tell you to “write what you know.”  So when, in a postpartum haze, I accidentally sent a photo of my newborn son (and my own vagina) to everyone I know – naturally I wrote a show about it.  This show is a quilt of parenting moments – the hilarious, the heartbreaking, and the humiliating – all based on real life moments from me, my family, and my friends. I am thrilled to share it with New York audiences.”

Tickets are $89.50 and can be purchased through Telecharge.com or by calling 212-239-6200.  Rated P for Parenthood will play the following schedule: Tuesday – Thursday at 7:00, Wednesday and Saturday at 2:30, Friday and Saturday at 8, and Sunday at 3:00.

“P is for Perfect! . . . deserves to go directly to midtown Manhattan.”

- Peter Filicia, Newark Star-Ledger

Additional details regarding the Off-Broadway debut will be announced shortly.

Amazing Grace

Next week I am working on a reading of the new musical AMAZING GRACE. I am really looking forward to it because  it is the first time I am working with Kim Grigsby since she was my voice teacher/musical director at Stagedoor Manor many, many, many years ago. I have always adored her and it will be fun to be in the room with her next week!

Another January

Happy New Year!! It seems like January is always a  little bleak. The holidays are over and a million shows close (usually one I am in). Last year we closed THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES on January 3rd and this year THE EXTRAORDINARY ORDINARY ended right before the holidays.

The good news is that this year I jumped right into a new project after New Years Day. I was lucky enough to have been brought in to work on a brand-new musical called RATED P last summer. We did a reading through the Midtown Direct Theatre Company in South Orange, NJ. Read more about the Midtown Direct Theatre Company here.

RATED P was such a wonderful experience this summer and I was thrilled when Sandy Rustin (c0- founder of Midtown Direct as well as a writer of RATED P) told me that SOPAC is going forward with the show and producing a 2 week workshop in January and a fully staged production in May.

So here we are. All back in the room together again working on a brand new musical. MY FAVORITE!!! I am surrounded by hysterically funny and fun people. The show was written by Sandy with Dan Lipton (music) and Dave Rossmer (music and lyrics). Directed by Jeremy Dobrish. Musically Directed by Meg  Zervoulis, Musically staged by Rachel Bress and starring Me, David Josefsberg, Charlie Pollock and Joanna Young. Here we are together after the reading in August:

Extraordinary Ordinarily Overwhelmed

And loving it!!

I am having a blast. Besides the challenge of learning a dozen songs and memorizing my lines, I could not be enjoying the process anymore. The gang that has been assembled is remarkable and we literally can’t stop laughing in rehearsals. Hopefully the audience will think we are as funny as we all think we are!!

I just wanted to take a second and reflect on how thankful I am to be creating a role in a new musical and being part of a creative working environment. This is why we do it!

Enjoyment.
